Where To Eat in Bayerisch Eisenstein

Our favourite restaurants

Poeschl
5-10 minutes walk from the house, slightly 'modernised' traditional food, excellent quality reasonable prices.

Fischerwirt
5-10 minutes from the house, excellent for fish but all food is good quality. Also excellent for dropping in for a drink - tables outside in summer beside the river, also barbecues.

Hotel Waldspitze
2 minutes from the house and more traditional.

For all restaurants:
  • you may need to book at busy times of the season
  • main courses will cost you less than €15, glass of wine or half litre of beer less than €4
  • Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) is excellent and a local speciality

For coffee and cakes, go to the Kaffeemuehle bakery and cafe in the main street.

Away from Bayerisch Eisenstein

Dampfbrauerei in Zwiesel
Small but excellent food (bottom of the wide part of the main street).

Waldbahn Hotel in Zwiesel
Opposite the station. Traditional restaurant with dark panelling, wooden tables. Excellent quality food. In summer, it is possible to eat in the garden at the front or on the balcony at the back.

Tips for eating out in Germany

Order a main course with a mixed salad. The mixed salad will usually come first, as a 'starter'. 3 course meals are rarely eaten except as a set menu, with smaller portions (which will tend to have smaller portions) Soups are usually on the menu and can be clear with dumplings or thick and filling like Goulaschsuppe (the latter is excellent as a light lunch)

Desserts are only eaten occasionally. Most restaurants will serve a range of ice creams. There are specialities such as Kaiserschmarrn and Germknoedel, which are strongly recommended but are very filling! For a light meal, especially in the evening, order a meat or cheese platter - usually a good range of different things, with served with pickles and bread.

German food still contains very high quantities of salt compared with UK. You may need to order your food 'ohne Salz' (without salt) which will not be possible for pre-prepared dishes.

Beer is the standard drink in the area and there are plenty of local breweries - the Dampfbier from Zwiesel is recommended and can be bought in the nah und gut in Bayerisch Eisenstein.

The area has no wine production but wines from neighbouring areas are served in restaurants: for red wine, try Dornfelder (or Zwiegelt from Austria), for white wine try a Franken or Pfalz wine (or Gruner Veltliner from Austria).
